Yabuuchi Satoshi, Japan's famous artist. His work "doji" caved from japanese cypress, in realistic three-dimensional figures with vividly faces and have innocent, homorous quality. His works are deeply rooted in ancient Chinese culture.The chinese influence on Japan was very strong through the 15th century.
I like Yabuuchi Satoshi's art work because there is a sort of spirit of Buddlist Statues imbed in his doji (children) sculptures. In the western world it is called spirt, The Japanese call it soul. There is a Japanese saying, that god dwells in children until the age of seven. Children represent innocence and wonder. Yabuuchi Satoshi isn't trying to create real-life children but a three-dimensional wood-made children coming from another world. In Japanese fables, there are stories of children with mysterious power. I think the power is nature.
In my point of view, designs fail because of just imitating fashionable styles blindly and the use of visual languages foreign to the audience.Yabuuchi's work is nature and embodying the spirit of Japanese culture in it. It is unique. His work always remain me to think of using the Chinese culture as a way to create my own visual language.
