I found an story of Shirley Pitts who spent about 50 years on shoplifting and just got caught 3 times!
Shirley Pitts was born in a unlucky family.Her relationship with her mother may have been the driving force that caused her to steal wherever she could some migt argue she was stealing love from shops. She once said, Adgie, her bank robber brother, was the only real man in her life, because he made her feel understood and really loved her,despite what she did to risk that respect. There were numberous lovers in Shirley's life but she said none of them really filled her up--kids and clothes were the main thing in her life.
Shirley Pitts did masquerade as different types of women when shoplifting, using wigs and outfits to make that happen. She used her femininity to her advantage and adopted many disguises and designer outfits to "blend" in with whatever context she found herself in, in order to "pass" as normal and therefore achieve her criminal aims with success. In the shops, Shirley was often impossible to recognise, even her own children have failed to see her when she dressed in full shoplifting "drag" Her femininity is expressed not just for her children,which for her, made up for everything that was missing, made up for all the pressures and conflicts she experienced from making a living from crime. She wanted to give her children everything she didn't have when growing up.
* Convicted shoplifters often view stealing from small and large shops as their " job", and develop various shoplifting techniquess and resell items to live.
* "Anyone can line a carrier bag, or even have a leather handbag lined like mine, but it's got to be thick foil because the other kitchen foil splits if you push the hangers in the bag too quick. The tinises hole can set off the whole alarm system and that's enough to get you nicked..."
------Shirley Pitts (1990)
Why do people shoplift?
" It Feels Good"
* Thrills, Fright, Power. In my research, I found a women who had been caught after shoplifting, she said:" I felt excited. I'd gotten away with it and it was thrilling! " She then said:" I was ashamed of myself-but also exhilarated. I felt really alive. Stealing and not getting caught gave me a tremendous sense of power."
Another example is a young man said after he stopped shoplifting, he felt the urge to steal again. " It followed me around like an addiction. I would be in a mall and see a radio in a store window and think, " " It would be so easy to take that thing. I could do it and never get caught."
Some people steal items from shop because of the emothional rush. They dont truly want the item they stole.
Other Reasons
* Depression. some people try to act out their depression through bad behavior--such as shoplifting.
* peer pressure. Some young people shoplift because of peer pressure--such theft may be the price of admission into a group of friends.
* To dispel boredom
* Living by theft. Some prefessional shoplifters make their liveing by theft.
* Lack of money/ want the items.
